How this is figured
- Self-employment tax: 92.35% of net profit, then 12.4% Social Security (up to the $184,500 2026 wage base, reduced by W-2 Social Security wages) plus 2.9% Medicare. Half of it is deducted from income. Applies at $400+ of net earnings. {src(IRSF,"Form 1040-ES (2026)")} · {src("https://www.irs.gov/publications/p15","IRS Pub. 15 (2026) wage base")}
- Income tax: 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly) and 2026 brackets. {src("https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/working-families-tax-cuts-individuals-and-workers","IRS 2026 inflation adjustments")}
- Estimate paid quarterly = (total tax - withholding) / 4, shown only if the balance is $1,000 or more (the IRS threshold). A second line shows 90% of this year's tax and, if you enter it, the prior-year safe harbor. The IRS allows paying whichever is smaller; see the IRS FAQ.
- Not included: head-of-household and married-filing-separately brackets (use the Form 1040-ES worksheet), Additional Medicare Tax, credits, state and local tax, the QBI income limits and specified-service-business rules (the checkbox is a simplification and may overstate the deduction at higher incomes), AMT, and uneven-income (annualized) methods. Enter any tips deduction under "other deductions"; IRS limits apply ($25,000 per return, and no more than net income from the business).
For a precise number use the Form 1040-ES worksheet or a licensed preparer. Estimates are rough and may differ from your actual tax.
