Rules to know (IRS Topic 510)
- Self-employed people can deduct business car costs by the standard mileage rate or actual expenses; you can figure both ways and compare.
- For a car you own, you must choose the standard mileage rate in the first year the car is available for your business to be able to use it later.
- Parking fees and tolls for business use are deductible separately under either method.
- Most employees cannot deduct unreimbursed car expenses; the self-employed generally can.
- The law requires adequate records or sufficient evidence supporting your statement. A log with date, miles, start and end, and business purpose is a common way to keep them (see IRS Topic 305 and Pub. 463).
